Matthew 21

The Triumphal Entry

1As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent out two disciples,

1And when they drew near to Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples,

2saying to them, “Go into the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt beside her. Untie them and bring them to Me.

2saying to them, “Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Having loosed them, bring them to Me.

3If anyone questions you, tell him that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.”

3And if anyone should say anything to you, you will say that the Lord has need of them, and immediately he will send them.”

4This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet:

4And this came to pass so that it might be fulfilled, that having been spoken through the prophet, saying,

5“Say to the Daughter of Zion,

‘See, your King comes to you,

gentle and riding on a donkey,

on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’”

5“Say to the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your King comes to you, gentle and mounted on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.’”

6So the disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them.

6And the disciples, having gone and having done as Jesus directed them,

7They brought the donkey and the colt and laid their cloaks on them, and Jesus sat on them.

7led the donkey and the colt and put their garments on them, and He sat on them.

8A massive crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road.

8And the very large crowd spread their garments in the road, and others were cutting branches from the trees and were spreading them in the road.

9The crowds that went ahead of Him and those that followed were shouting:

“Hosanna to the Son of David!”

“Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!”

“Hosanna in the highest!”

9And the crowds going before Him and those following were crying out, saying: “Hosanna to the Son of David!” “Blessed is the One coming in the name of the Lord!” “Hosanna in the highest!”

10When Jesus had entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, “Who is this?”

10And on His having entered into Jerusalem, all the city was shaken, saying, “Who is this?”

11The crowds replied, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.”

11And the crowds were saying, “This is the prophet, Jesus, the One from Nazareth of Galilee.”

Jesus Cleanses the Temple

12Then Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those selling doves.

12And Jesus entered into the temple and cast out all those selling and buying in the temple. And He overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those selling the doves.

13And He declared to them, “It is written: ‘My house will be called a house of prayer.’ But you are making it ‘a den of robbers.’”

13And He says to them, “It has been written: ‘My house will be called a house of prayer.’ But you are making it ‘a den of robbers.’”

14The blind and the lame came to Him at the temple, and He healed them.

14And the blind and the lame came to Him in the temple, and He healed them.

15But the chief priests and scribes were indignant when they saw the wonders He performed and the children shouting in the temple courts, “Hosanna to the Son of David!”

15But the chief priests and the scribes, having seen the wonders that He did and the children crying out in the temple and saying, “Hosanna to the Son of David,” were indignant.

16“Do You hear what these children are saying?” they asked.

“Yes,” Jesus answered. “Have you never read:

‘From the mouths of children and infants

You have ordained praise’?”

16And they said to Him, “Do You hear what these say?” And Jesus says to them, “Yes. Did you never read: ‘Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings You prepared praise’?”

17Then He left them and went out of the city to Bethany, where He spent the night.

17And having left them, He went out of the city to Bethany, and He lodged there.

The Barren Fig Tree

18In the morning, as Jesus was returning to the city, He was hungry.

18And in the morning, having come back into the city, He was hungry.

19Seeing a fig tree by the road, He went up to it but found nothing on it except leaves. “May you never bear fruit again!” He said. And immediately the tree withered.

19And having seen one fig tree on the way, He went to it and found nothing on it except leaves. And He says to it, “Never let there be anymore fruit out of you, to the age!” And the fig tree withered immediately.

20When the disciples saw this, they marveled and asked, “How did the fig tree wither so quickly?”

20And having seen it, the disciples marveled, saying, “How did the fig tree wither immediately?”

21“Truly I tell you,” Jesus replied, “if you have faith and do not doubt, not only will you do what was done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ it will happen.

21And answering, Jesus said to them, “Truly I say to you, if you shall have faith and not doubt, you will do not only this of the fig tree, but even if you should say to this mountain, ‘Be taken away and be cast into the sea,’ it will come to pass.

22If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.”

22And all things, as many as you might ask in prayer, believing, you will receive.”

Jesus’ Authority Challenged

23When Jesus returned to the temple courts and began to teach, the chief priests and elders of the people came up to Him. “By what authority are You doing these things?” they asked. “And who gave You this authority?”

23And on His having come into the temple teaching, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to Him, saying, “By what authority do You do these things?” And who gave You this authority?

24“I will also ask you one question,” Jesus replied, “and if you answer Me, I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things.

24And answering, Jesus said to them, “I will also ask you one word, which if you tell Me, I will also tell you by what authority I do these things.

25What was the source of John’s baptism? Was it from heaven or from men?”

They deliberated among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will ask, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’

25From where was the baptism of John? From heaven or from men?” And they were reasoning among themselves, saying, “If we should say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say to us, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’

26But if we say, ‘From men,’ we are afraid of the people, for they all regard John as a prophet.”

26But if we should say, ‘From men,’ we fear the crowd, for all hold John as a prophet.”

27So they answered, “We do not know.”

And Jesus replied, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.

27And answering Jesus, they said, “We do not know.” And He said to them, “Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things.

The Parable of the Two Sons

28But what do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first one and said, ‘Son, go and work today in the vineyard.’

28But what do you think? A man had two sons, and having come to the first he said, ‘Son, go today, work in the vineyard.’

29‘I will not,’ he replied. But later he changed his mind and went.

29And answering, he said, ‘I will not.’ But afterward, having repented, he went.

30Then the man went to the second son and told him the same thing.

‘I will, sir,’ he said. But he did not go.

30And having come to the second, he said likewise. And answering, he said, ‘I will sir,’ and he did not go.

31Which of the two did the will of his father?”

“The first,” they answered.

Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, the tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God before you.

31Which of the two did the will of the father?” They say, “The first.” Jesus says to them, “Truly I say to you that the tax collectors and the prostitutes go before you into the kingdom of God.

32For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and prostitutes did. And even after you saw this, you did not repent and believe him.

32For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him. And you, having seen, did not even repent afterward to believe him.

The Parable of the Wicked Tenants

33Listen to another parable: There was a landowner who planted a vineyard. He put a wall around it, dug a winepress in it, and built a tower. Then he rented it out to some tenants and went away on a journey.

33Hear another parable: There was a man, a master of a house, who planted a vineyard, and placed around it a fence, and dug a winepress in it, and built a tower. And he rented it out to farmers and traveled abroad.

34When the harvest time drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants to collect his share of the fruit.

34And when the season of the fruits drew near, he sent his servants to the farmers to receive his fruits.

35But the tenants seized his servants. They beat one, killed another, and stoned a third.

35And the farmers, having taken his servants, one they beat, and one they killed, and one they stoned.

36Again, he sent other servants, more than the first group. But the tenants did the same to them.

36Again he sent other servants, more than the first, and they did likewise to them.

37Finally, he sent his son to them. ‘They will respect my son,’ he said.

37And afterward he sent his son to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’

38But when the tenants saw the son, they said to one another, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and take his inheritance.’

38But the farmers, having seen the son, said among themselves, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and gain possession of his inheritance.’

39So they seized him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.

39And having taken him, they cast him out of the vineyard and killed him.

40Therefore, when the owner of the vineyard returns, what will he do to those tenants?”

40Therefore, when the lord of the vineyard shall come, what will he do to those farmers?”

41“He will bring those wretches to a wretched end,” they replied, “and will rent out the vineyard to other tenants who will give him his share of the fruit at harvest time.”

41They say to Him, “He will destroy those evil ones grievously, and he will give out the vineyard to other farmers who will give back to him the fruits in their seasons.”

42Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures:

‘The stone the builders rejected

has become the cornerstone.

This is from the Lord,

and it is marvelous in our eyes’?

42Jesus says to them, “Did you never read in the Scriptures: ‘The stone that those building rejected, this became the head of the corner. This was from the Lord, and it is marvelous in our eyes’?

43Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit.

43Because of this I say to you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you, and it will be given to a people producing its fruits.

44He who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces, but he on whom it falls will be crushed.”

44And the one having fallen on this stone will be broken; but on whomever it might fall, it will grind him to powder.”

45When the chief priests and Pharisees heard His parables, they knew that Jesus was speaking about them.

45And the chief priests and the Pharisees, having heard His parables, knew that He speaks about them.

46Although they wanted to arrest Him, they were afraid of the crowds, because the people regarded Him as a prophet.

46And seeking to lay hold of Him, they feared the crowds, because they were holding Him as a prophet.
